Claude review summary Scope: Full review. 3 files changed (118 additions, 49 deletions), all Markdown — all three reviewed: the new Findings by severity — CRITICAL: 0 · IMPORTANT: 0 · SUGGESTION: 3 All three are internal-consistency issues in the reported numbers. None blocks merge.
Also still open: CodeRabbit's existing finding on line 35 ("5 of 6" should be 4 ahead / 1 tie / 1 behind at iteration 50) — confirmed correct against the table; I did not duplicate it as a separate comment. What I verified and found correct. The quantitative backbone of this document holds up well:
Repo-facing claims also check out:
Assessment — risk: very low. Documentation only: no code, no API surface, no mode registration, no export path, nothing that can affect a user's checkpoint or runtime. The restructuring into Two things worth calling out as good practice: replacing the earlier stop-token probe (one 6K trace, no chat template) with a full-vocabulary probe over 32 sub-steps using the eval's exact prompts is a real strengthening of the evidence, not just a rewording — and it correctly retracts the conclusion the weaker probe supported, redirecting the "next run" advice from top-p / full-vocab KL to on-policy distillation. Documenting a negative result at this level of detail, including the ~2.9x cost of the format that lost, is more useful to the next person than a clean recipe would be. The three suggestions are worth a quick pass since this file's value rests on its numbers reconciling, but they are cosmetic relative to the content. 🤖 Generated with Claude Code |

Fix the BF16 SciCode median (an aborted run was pooled), name SciCode as the second iteration-500 contributor, call iteration 300 nearly tied, and scope the presence_penalty accuracy claim to run-to-run noise. Bot review (gpt-6.1-sol) — DM the bot to share feedback.
Nudge: the ablation results are useful, but the data-format and stopping conclusions need to reflect the documented experimental limitations.
Needs action:
- Qualify
README.md’s “Changing the data format alone does not help” andABLATIONS.md’s causal conclusions: packing and teacher nondeterminism also changed. Say these chat-SFT configurations did not improve the final mean, with the comparison provisional. - Narrow
ABLATIONS.md’s “QAD does not suppress stopping” to the measured result: dequantized students preserve</think>probability on sampled teacher prefixes. Distinguish ending reasoning from emitting the actual stop token, and avoid extrapolating to W4A4 serving.
No action needed:
- The SciCode config matches the uncommenting instructions, and the new cross-file anchors resolve. No runtime code or tests change.
Mark the chat-SFT vs pre-tokenized comparison as provisional (the chat path also changed packing and teacher noise), and narrow the stop-token finding to </think> on teacher text with dequantized students. in general, good idea to move ablations to separate README, left a few comments to improve clarity
Point the megatron_bridge README to tutorials/README.md, simplify the intro and SciCode wording, state tokens per iteration, tighten the data-format results and say the chat-SFT section holds launch details. … Omniscience calibration, announcement update (#2899) ### What does this PR do? Type of change: documentation Follow-up to #2835. Adds a controlled rerun to the Qwen3.6-35B-A3B data-format ablation and corrects its kernel caveat. - **Correction.** #2835 said the packed chat-SFT runs had a *noisy* teacher. They had a *wrong* kernel. In FLA 0.4.2 (`nemo:26.08`), `chunk_gated_delta_rule` on packed (`cu_seqlens`) input disagrees with each document run alone. It affects both the teacher and the student: - 11% of tokens are off by more than 1% of the layer output's maximum, and the worst by ~20%. - FLA 0.5.2 is bit-exact and reproducible. - The pre-tokenized (unpacked) runs are exact on both versions. - FLA 0.4.2's KDA kernel is also exact on packed input. - **Controlled rerun at iteration 50.** Three arms separate cross-document attention, the loss mask and the kernel. Mean delta vs BF16 over the six benchmarks: - A, pre-tokenized (the main run): −1.30 - B, + per-document attention: −0.85 - C, chat SFT with assistant-only loss on FLA 0.5.2: −1.02 - Chat SFT on FLA 0.4.2 (from #2835): −0.34 - **Reading.** - All three setups are within noise of each other. - The correct kernel did not reproduce chat SFT's iteration-50 lead. C is 0.68 lower, mostly on SciCode, and not because of runaway generations (C has the lowest capped rate, 2.0%). - So the earlier −0.34 was a favourable draw, consistent with its lead fading by iteration 300. - **Recipe unchanged:** pre-tokenized windows, no document boundaries. No code changes: neither per-document attention nor the FLA upgrade is needed for it. - **README:** two pointer sentences updated; drops "provisionally". - **Knowledge recall and calibration (new README section + `eval_configs/omniscience.yaml`).** AA-Omniscience, 600 questions x 10 repeats, `pass@1[avg-of-10]`, Gemini 3 Flash judge: | Model | Correct | Abstained | Index | Hallucination | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | BF16 | 21.0 | 46.0 | -11.3 | 40.9% | | W4A16 PTQ (published) | 20.9 | 42.2 | -15.4 | 45.8% | | W4A4 PTQ | 20.2 | 39.8 | -19.1 | 49.2% | | + QAD 500 | 21.0 | 29.8 | -27.5 | 61.4% | QAD keeps the correct rate but makes the model guess instead of abstaining. It is worst at iteration 50 (-31.4), partly recovers by 300 (-25.1), and chat SFT at 500 is -24.1. ABLATIONS.md gains these rows and a note on tracking abstention. - **Announcement (`docs/source/announcements/qwen36-w4a4-qad.rst`)**, unchanged since #2411: its numbers still match the tutorial, but it predates the SciCode output-length finding (#2606), the ablations (#2835) and this calibration result. Adds a dated update note, two highlights, a short "Output Length and Calibration" section, and an ablations link. ### Testing - Docs only; `pre-commit` (markdownlint) passes; new anchors resolve. - Omniscience: 7 checkpoints evaluated on oci-hsg (BF16, W4A16, W4A4 PTQ, QAD 50/300/500, chat SFT 500), about 1.5-2 h each on 1 node; the blog RST parses cleanly with docutils. - Numbers come from the evaluation pool: - accuracy pooled per NEL invocation (same repeat counts as #2835); - SciCode capped/median from per-response `output.jsonl`. - Kernel numbers come from teacher-forcing a real packed pair, then random-input packed vs per-document checks on FLA 0.4.2 and 0.5.2. ### Before your PR is "*Ready for review*" - Is this change backward compatible?: N/A - If you copied code from any other sources or added a new PIP dependency, did you follow guidance in `CONTRIBUTING.md`: N/A - Did you write any new necessary tests?: N/A - Did you update [Changelog](https://github.com/NVIDIA/Model-Optimizer/blob/main/CHANGELOG.rst)?: N/A - Did you get Claude approval on this PR?: N/A 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) <!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> <!-- coderabbit-ai-generated:v1 --> ## Summary by CodeRabbit * **New Features** * Added an Omniscience evaluation configuration with long-context generation, retries, caching, request logging, and external judging. * **Documentation** * Expanded evaluation guidance with recall, calibration, abstention, hallucination, output length, and SciCode findings. * Documented controlled comparisons across tokenization, kernel versions, document isolation, loss settings, and data approaches. * Added evaluation setup requirements, repeat semantics, judge configuration, throughput considerations, FLA correctness guidance, and links to ablation results. <!-- end of auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> --------- Signed-off-by: Keval Morabia <28916987+kevalmorabia97@users.noreply.github.com> Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
What does this PR do?
Type of change: documentation
Adds the Qwen3.6-35B-A3B QAD data-format experiments to the tutorial and moves non-recipe experiments out of the main README into a new
ABLATIONS.md, following the Nemotron-3-Nano tutorial's layout.ABLATIONS.md:presence_penaltyper-build table, the rate-cost trade-off and the Lotfi et al. comparison are moved here verbatim from the README.<|im_end|>5th inside loops) used no chat template and one 6K-token trace. It is replaced by a full-vocabulary probe of 16 normal and 16 runaway SciCode sub-steps with the eval's exact prompts, under the teacher and the PTQ, QAD-50 and QAD-500 students. Findings:presence_penaltystays the recommended fix.<details>block becomes one paragraph: what it is, thepresence_penalty: 1.5fix, and when not to use it, with a link toABLATIONS.md. The intro and the "better data blend" item link to the ablation. The recommended recipe and the main results are unchanged: pre-tokenized blend, 500 iterations. The chat-SFT runs used two
distill.pyoptions that are not in this repository: in-batch packing of SFT rows and a zero MoE aux-loss coefficient. They are not upstreamed because the format did not win.ABLATIONS.mdsays so and lists the gotchas for anyone repeating the comparison.Testing
